A lady general, imagine for centuries in ancient China where women played an insignificant role in the society, Hua Mu Lan did just the opposite, she was one of the forunners of "woman's emancipation". If men can so can women!
Ivy Ling Po showed again her acting prowess in this movie, fate played a big role here, it brought her and Chin Han together and they are happily married thereafter (not just in this movie but in real life)!

Diane,

Well said!

Despite this movie having been made in 1964, it holds up pretty well. I really appreciate the emphasis on Hua Mulan's wanting to help her father. This is part of the original Chinese poem about her, which Disney didn't keep in its version "Mulan". Disney being an American company, emphasized Mulan's going to war as part of her finding herself. They also inserted a mascot, a little magic dragon!

Ivy Ling Po played Hua Mu Lan so beautifully in this movie, she really does the character justice, both as a martial young woman, and disguised as a man in the army too.

I was very young when I first saw this movie in Malaysia with my sister and honestly I couldn't recall how I felt about it then. Today, I love it very much esp Celestials has given it a magical lift in colour picture and sound. Ling Po played her roles extremely well in both male and female. She's very gifted in acting and singing. Her Huangmei songs are so great that I could play the soundtracks again and again! Her lover, Chin Han appeared quite thin in the movie and definitely they make a handsome pair till today. Bravo! Ling Po, you deserved the Asian Movie Queen Award!!!
