Two shy lovers came together through the help of the cheeky maid "Hong Niang". This "scandalous" novel of the olden times was made into a lovely Hua Mei Diao movie by SB. Wonderful songs, excellent stars and beautiful background and costumes, you'll love it!
Could rate 3 stars. Not really that bad.
Ivan
Ivan, no dispute on the acting, just that the 'scandalous ' plot has made this a mediocre movie ...
Three beautiful actresses (Ling Po, Li Ching and Fang Yin)performed well together in this old-fashioned love story. Ling Po (portrayed as a demure scholar) was enchanted by the beauty of Fang Yin and could not get her out of his mind since the first accidental meeting in the garden. This story revealed the message that "When there's a will, there's a way" but NOT without the obstacles and tireless help of the sensitive, cheeky maid played by Li Ching. The colour, costumes and songs were lovely but the style of Huangmei music and lyrics were a bit different from traditional.Nonetheless, it's still worthwhile to grab this movie while still available.
I see Lawrence, points noted. But the beauty is that this SB version could make the 'scandalous' part so subdued that one remembers this West Chamber as only another entertaining huangmei diao movie. diane and amelia summarised it well.
