This movie has different huangmei tunes which makes it a refreshing film. Shaws has changed the sad ending of the original tale into a happy one. I think a tragic ending would have made a bigger impact especially if the stars act well.

Lawrence,

Thank you very much for posting a review w/the usual movie poster of this huangmei. If it wasn't for the Ivy discussion board's dialogue about the original story being a tragedy, I wouldn't have known.

Given SB's tendencies to change folktales such as this one, I still appreciate the aspects that fans can, including Ivy and Fang Yin's performances, lovely singing by both Tsin Ting and Ivy, the lovely costumes and sets. Sure wish that the plot wasn't so lightweight much of the time, the nature of the story isn't well portrayed compared to earlier classics such as "Love Eterne" in which humor and tragedy were shown much more effectively.

This is one huangmei diao I like least. The plot, tunes, you name it - nothing seems right to me! I shall keep the dvd only to take a peep at Fang Yin. :)
